What Should I Wear to my Family Shoot?

Styling a family shoot can be stressful but it shouldn’t be. Here are a few helpful tips to help you style your outfits.

Start with neutrals. Then, add color. - Style majority of the family in neutrals then add coordinating colors. Additionally, keep in the mind the purpose of the shoot and your personal style. If you often wear a neutral uniform, do not dress in bold colors if they are not you or vise versa.

Start with one person.

Like most things, it is easier to start with one task at a time. So style one person first. Try starting with mom or daughter, since women’s clothing tends to have more options. Then, coordinate the rest of the family around this person.

Which brings us to the next thing… Compliment. Do not match.

To achieve the stylish and best looking images, do not match your outfits. The days of photos with the entire family wearing khakis and white shirts are in the 90s. Now, it’s all about complimenting. You want to style colors that go well nicely together. Like soft colors (soft blue, blush, gray) or warm colors (brown, orange, burgundy). You can choose a simple outfit or prints but avoid loud prints and loud colors in one.

Consider your home decor.

If you’re planning to hang your images in your living room that’s decorated in all white, you probably don’t want your clothing to be dark. If you’re hanging them in a colorful nursery, then wear vivid outfits.

Plan for the weather.

I cannot stress this enough. There is absolutely nothing worse than being super uncomfortable in the best outfit. Dress in layers in the colder months, and dress light in the hotter months. If you are not comfy, your photos will show it.

Make your photos timeless.

You might love that trendy top or pair of pants now but will your photos stand the test of time if you wear that item of clothing? Choose a timeless dress.

Fit is important.

I cannot stress this enough. Your clothing should fit you well and compliment your body. Anything other than a good fit will not photograph well. I suggest trying on your outfits prior and ensuring that you are confident.
